Several of these references chronicle the history of the region before the establishment of the county in 1749. Notable examples include ‘17th Century Isle of Wight County Virginia’ by John Bennett Boddie III which tells the story of Southampton County when the county was known as the Nottoway Parish of Isle of Wight County. ‘Cavaliers and Pioneers’ by Nell Marion Nigent contains abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants from 1623.

Other such as ‘Southampton County Folklore’ by Mrs. John E Beale, tell of the people, places, and events in Southampton County not found in the official records.
