MAMIE UMPHLETTE MARTIN

Mamie Umphlette Martin, 86, passed away Friday, May 7, 2004, at
Brunswick Cove Nursing Home in Winnabow, N.C.
Born in Franklin, Va., on Oct. 31, 1917, she was the daughter of the
late Lonnie R. Umphlette and Lizabeth Bradshaw Umphlette of Zuni. Mamie
retired from Camp Perry, Va., where she had worked as a telephone
operator, and for many years had worked as a nurse at Eastern State
Hospital in Williamsburg, Va.
She and her husband, Jim, were members of Grace Baptist Church in
Williamsburg, and she had attended Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, Zuni,
Va., in her youth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Martin Sr., six
siblings, and her granddaughter, Deborah Banks.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her children, Betsy Nielsen of Williamsburg,
Va., James "Larry" Martin and his wife, Shirley, of Oak Island, N.C.,
and Toni Carol Martin and husband, Thomas Mechling, of St. Augustine,
Fla.; grandchildren, Leah Nielsen and husband, Tim Krosch, of
Tuscaloosa, Ala., Diane Nielsen and husband, Dana Gibboney, of Virginia
Beach, Va., Cynthia Martin and husband, Steve, of Williamsburg, Va.,
Glenn Bayley and wife, Jody Bart, of Livingston, Va., Michael Ihlefield
and Richard Ihlefield of Oak Island, N.C., Melissa Ihlefield and
husband, Bruce Crook, of Smithfield, Va., and Tracy Ihlefield of
Marietta, Ga.; and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Purviance
Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield, Va. Committal services will follow in
Tucker Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Zuni. The family will receive
friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is assisting the family with the
arrangements.
