SUFFOLK Verlie Spivey Matthews, 84, of the 100 block of Rosewood Drive, died Jan. 26, 1999, at her residence.
She was a native of Gates County, N.C., the daughter of the late Joseph Anderson Spivey and Vanlieu Bunch Spivey and the widow of Willard L. Matthews. She was also predeceased by three brothers, J. Vernon Spivey, E. Vance Spivey and J.T. Spivey.
She retired as a teachers assistant from the Day Care Center of First Baptist Church in Suffolk. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, the Senior Womans Sunday school Class and the W.M.U.
She is survived by brothers, Victor B. Spivey of Colonial Heights, Va., and Murry F. Spivey of Suffolk; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. M.S. McGuire and the Rev. Stewart McCarter. The family will be at the residence for visitation.
Contributions may be made to Virginia Baptist Childrens Home and Family Services, P.O. 849, Salem, Va. 24153.
