Alice Simmons Pope, 83, widow of Joseph William Pope Jr., died May 11,
2004, at her home. Born in Vicksville, she was a daughter of the late
Thomas Owen and Mary Alice Kitchen Simmons and was retired co-owner of
J.W. Pope Insurance Agency. Mrs. Pope was a faithful member and longtime
treasurer of Boykins United Methodist Church and the churchs United
Methodist Women.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Flannagan of Irvington, Va. and
Teresa Friedman and husband Arthur of Williamsburg; two grandsons, David
and Matthew Friedman; and three sisters, Joyce S. Comer of Richmond,
Jean S. Bass of Jarratt and Louise S. Tomlinson of Emporia. She was
predeceased by three brothers, Thomas O. Simmons Jr., Alfred L. Simmons
and Bobby B. Simmons.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Boykins United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Edward L. Johnson and the Rev. Dan Ivey
officiating. Burial will follow in Capron Cemetery . The family will
receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the residence and suggests
that memorials be made to Boykins United Methodist Church, 32167 S. Main
St., Boykins, VA 23827. Wright Funeral Home, Boykins, has charge of
arrangements.
