MARY R. THOMSON

Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - May 17, 2001 

Mary Thomas Rawls Thomson died of breast cancer Jan. 24, 2001. She was born June 15, 1913, in Ivor, Va., the only child of Ruth Batten Cobb and Willie Calvin Rawls. 

After graduating from Ivor High School in 1929 she attended the State Teachers College (now Longwood College), Farmville, Va., and graduated in 1933, second in her class, with a B.S. in math and science. From 1934 to 1937 she taught at Boykins High School, Boykins, Va. In 1937 she moved to Alexandria, Va., to teach in the math department at George Washington High School and was there for six years. She married James Anderson Thomson on May 30, 1941. During World War II she worked briefly as a statistician at U.S. News and World Report and TWA. In 1944 she joined the first faculty at St. Stephens School and taught math there for three years. After raising two children she worked in the business office of St. Agnes School from 1965 to 1975 and also served as a substitute teacher. In 1991 she and ``Jimmy'' retired to Charlottesville. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Alexandria, First Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville, the Carlyle Woman's Club, the Alexandria Hospital Auxiliary Board, and Alpha Sigma Tau sorority. 

She is survived by her husband of 60 years; a son, J. Anderson Thomson of Charlottesville; a daughter, Ruth G. Thomson of Alexandria; a grandson, Matthew A. Thomson of Boston; and a granddaughter, Katherine Thomson of Princeton, N.J. 

A graveside service will be conducted at Ivor Cemetery , Ivor, Va. on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jim Becker officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Purviance Funeral Home of Wakefield is in charge of arrangements.
