Nita Strawberry Powell Derby, 86, died July 23, 1998, in Courtland Healthcare Center.
Born in Como, N.C., she was the daughter of the late William T. and Annie Saunders Powell and the widow of Virgil L. Derby. Mrs. Derby was a former sales lady with Roses Department Store and a former employee of St. Regis Paper Co. She was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Derby is survived by a son, Virgil L. Derby Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Suffolk; a brother, Paul Powell of Murfreesboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Richard L. Derby, Harry Lee Derby, Sandy Derby Savage and Scott Derby; three great-grandchildren, Richard Derby, Ryan Derby and Brandon Savage.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park . The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 7 p.m. today and suggests that memorial donations be made to Courtland Healthcare Center or to the Franklin Rescue Squad.
