MIRIIAM MAITLAND FRANCIS
Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - January 17, 2006
CAPRON - Miriam Maitland Francis, 80, died Jan. 16, 2006.
A native of Greensboro, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert
S. and Grace Solomon Maitland and was the former secretary of the
Virginia Peanut Growers Association and the late Sen. William V.
Rawlings. Mrs. Francis also served for 52 years as the clerk for the
town of Capron. She was a member of the Franklin Chapter of the Order
of the Eastern Star, Capron Volunteer Fire and Rescue Women's
Auxiliary and former secretary of the Southampton County Democratic
Committee. She was a member of Capron United Methodist Church and the
United Methodist Women.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Vernie W. Francis Sr.; two
sons, Vernie W. Francis Jr. and his wife, Esther, of Courtland and J.
Clay Francis and his wife, Maryanne, of Edinburg, Va.; five
grandchildren, Angie F. Floyd and her husband, Chip, of Chesapeake,
Vernie W. Francis III of Capron, Joshua L. Francis of
Charlottesville, John B. Barksdale of Courtland and Lindsey G.
Francis of Richmond; and special caregivers, Cynthia Engram and Mamie
Harris. Mrs. Francis was predeceased by a brother, Robert S. Maitland
Jr.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Capron
Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Chad Brady officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence at 23165 Main St.
and suggests memorials be made to Capron UMC, c/o Mrs. Kay Pope,
16208 Old Belfield Road, Capron, VA 23829 or Capron Fire and Rescue,
P.O. Box 128, Capron VA 23829. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is in
charge of arrangements.
