Kathryn Hope Howell Burden, 83, of the 24300 block of Knoxville Road, died Sept. 15, 2001, in her residence.
Mrs. Burden was born in old Nansemond County, Va., and taught at Windsor Elementary School from 1938 to 1943. She returned to teach in 1951 with the Newport News public school system, where she was instrumental in founding and developing the special education programs. She retired in 1980 after 20 years as a special education teacher with a combined total of 32 years of teaching.
She was a member of Windsor Baptist Church, where she organized the Children's Band and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Adult Sunday School Class No. 2. She was also a charter member of North Riverside Baptist Church in Newport News.
She was a member of the State Teacher's Association Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, and served on the Western Tidewater Community Services Board for eight years.
She was a graduate of Longwood State Teacher's College and a graduate of Old Dominion University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She was selected Teacher of the Year for Newport News public schools in 1963. She was also selected in Who's Who from Teachers of America.
She was the daughter of the late Mills Abram Howell and Anna Baker Howell. She was predeceased by two brothers, Marion Howell and Ellenor Howell.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, James William Burden of Windsor; daughter, Sandra Faye Burden of Windsor; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Wayne and Dawn Burden of Windsor; grandchildren, Lisa Stamps, Dana Beale, Erica Zill and Jesse Zill; great-grandchildren, Aaron Stamps and Kaleigh Beale; and sisters, Lelia Mundie of Hampton, Va., and Anne Pierce of Berryville, Va.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home by the Rev. Tony Johnson. Interment will be in Colosse Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
