Eliza Everett Darden , 96, a resident of Westminster Canterbury, died there on Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998.
She was born in Nansemond County, Va., the daughter of Paul Lee Everett and Annie Holland Everett. After graduation from Westhampton College in Richmond, she taught in public schools in Suffolk for several years. The widow of George F. Darden , she moved with her children to Virginia Beach in 1937. Later, she was a hostess for Colonial Williamsburg for 15 years. She was an early member of the Virginia Beach Garden Club, a member of Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, a student of Colonial American history, an Anglophile and avid traveler, often accompanied by her children and later, her grandchildren.
Mrs. Darden is survived by a daughter, Ann Darden Markovits; a son, George F. Darden Jr., both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Elise Everett Kramer of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Robert Lee Hunter III of Charlotte, N.C., Victoria Darden Markovits of New York City, and Jennifer M. Darden and John C. Darden , both of Virginia Beach; and a great-grandson, Robert Lee Hunter IV, of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury, 3100 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. Services will be conducted by the Rev. John H. Jordan. Mrs. Darden will be buried in a private ceremony in the Everett family plot in the Holland Cemetery on South Quay Road in Suffolk. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Norfolk Botanical Gardens, 6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, Va. 23518; or Galilee Episcopal Church, 40th Street and Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, Va. 23451. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
