   SUFFOLK  Mel Lewter Duke, 62, died July 13, 2003 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
   She was a native of Suffolk and the daughter of the late James W. Lewter and Mildred Brinkley Lewter. Mrs. Duke was a special education teacher at Nansemond River High School She was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church in which she was a teacher for the Friendship Class, of the Board of Christian Education, and a secretary for the Pastoral Search Committee.
   She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Duke of Suffolk; step-daughters, Deborah D. and husband Heath Bryant of Nags Head, N.C., and Cynthia D. and Scott Krentz of Stanton, Neb.; grandchildren, Joshua and Adam Frentz; a brother, J. William Lewter and his wife, Phyllis of Chesapeake; a niece, Ami Lewter  Hudson and her husband, Brandon of Halifax; a nephew, Jay Lewter and his wife, Carla of Chesapeake; and a great-nephew, Ethan Lewter of Chesapeake.
   A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Liberty Spring Christian Church by Chaplain Tommy Reynolds and the Rev. Bill Bates. Burial will be in Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Parr Funeral home and other times at the residence, 4101 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk Contributions may be made to the Liberty Spring Christian Church Memorial Fund at 4213 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434.
