Ruth Mae Drake Thorpe, 81, a resident of Newsoms , died March 10, 1998, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.
A lifelong resident of Southampton County, she was the widow of Carl Cleveland Thorpe Jr. and daughter of the late Abner and Minnie Outland Drake. Mrs. Thorpe was a seamstress, a homemaker and a member of the Newsoms Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Marion T. Strickland of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; a son, Roger Keith Thorpe of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters, Ruby D. Smith of Conway, N.C., and Pearl D. Carter of Boykins; a brother, Harvey Drake of Perryville, Mo., and five grandchildren, Michael Ford, Bryan McLawhorn, Kelley McLawhorn, Crystal Strickland, and Carrie Thorpe.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Newsoms Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Williams. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery , Newsoms . The family will receive friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the Newsoms Baptist Church building fund.
