SUFFOLK - Mamie Olivia Basler, 88, of Oakdale Terrace, a retired school teacher, passed away suddenly on Monday, April 2, 2001, at Louise Obici Hospital. 
A native and lifelong resident of Suffolk, Miss Basler graduated from Mary Washington College in 1931. She began her teaching career in Crewe and later spent many years teaching at Suffolk High School. She was a member of Delta Cappa Gamma Society and the Nansemond Suffolk Historical Society. Miss Basler was a member of Suffolk Christian Church, the West Memorial Bible Class, and was chairman of the Memorial Resolution Committee of the class. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship Circle 1 and a former member of the Chancel Choir. She loved to travel and went on many trips throughout the USA and abroad. 
Survivors include her nieces, Mary Jane O'Neill, Carolyn Coble; and brother-in-law, J. Thomas Pitts, all of Fredericksburg; a very dear and longtime devoted friend, Louise Clayton of Portsmouth. 
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Suffolk Christian Church by the Rev. Michael D. Halley with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Suffolk Christian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1457, Suffolk, VA 23439.
