Wagner, Ex-Sheriff of Nansemond Dies Edward Eugene Wagner, 81, former Commissioner of Revenue and former Sheriff of Nansemond County, died yesterday (18 February 1955) at 12:30 p.m. at his home in Suffolk. After working as a youth in the grocery business and then building up a reputation as a boatman as the owner of two vessels that ferried between Everett's Bridge and Baltimore, he was elected as County Commissioner of Revenue in 1911. In 1915, he was elected Sheriff and then retired from politics to become a Federal Prohibition Agent. In 1929, he returned to the grocery business and then retired in 1947. A member of Oakland Christian Church, Chuckatuck, he was past master of the Chuckatuck Lodge and a 50-year Mason. Mr. Wagner is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eva Holland Wagner; a daughter, Miss Lillian Wagner of Suffolk; five sons: Eugene B. Wagner of Suffolk; Kermit H. Wagner of Culpeper; Lt. Comdr. Clifton J.
