Benjamin Dewey Vasser 1 DEC 1900 - 20 DEC 1946 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BENJAMIN DEWEY VASSER Benjamin Dewey Vasser, age 46, of 621 South Ellen Road, Newport News, died Friday, December 20, at 1 o’clock in Riverside Hospital, due to fatal injuries received when struck by a hit and run automobile driver, on Wednesday night, December 18, about 9 o’clock while crossing Jefferson Avenue near 56th Street. He was found by Warwick County officer J. L. Davis, lying across the white center line and groceries strewed over the highway, with both legs broken, he also received lacerations of the head and body and remained unconscious until death. Mr. Vasser was the eldest son of Mrs. Syble Jennings Vasser and the late Mr. Vasser, a life long resident of Southampton County and a member of Black Creek Baptist Church until going to Newport News six years ago when he joined the Baptist Church there. While there he was employed as a ship carpenter by the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 22, at 11 o’clock at the Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Herman T. Stevens, pastor of Oncutt Avenue Baptist Church, with the Odd Fellows of East End Lodge No. 247, of which he belonged, concluding the services at the grave. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Odd Fellows. Friends of the family were honorary pallbearers. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hazel Ellis Vasser, daughter, Miss Mary Louise Vasser, student at Morrison High School, mother, Mrs. Syble Jennings Vasser of Franklin, brother, Frank Vasser, also of Franklin.
