Thomas Umphlett Jr. Preston - Thomas C. Umphlett Jr, 76, of Preston, passed away at home, surrounded by his family on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018. He was born Nov. 7, 1941, in Westerly, a son to the late Barbara (Swain) and Thomas C. Umphlett Sr. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene M. (Fortin) Umphlett. Tom served his country honorably within the U.S. Navy before becoming an electrician working as an electrical contractor for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and will be missed by his dog "Slate." In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by his children, Glenn T. Umphlett (Michele), Patricia U. Mandeville (Steven), Julie I. Witter(Duane); siblings, Barbara Robert, Dennis Umphlett, Larry Umphlett, Gary Umphlett, Debra McGowan, and Joann Schmidt. He was predeceased by his sister, Carol McMahon. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew T. Umphlett (Nicole), Michael W. Umphlett, Jacob T. Umphlett, Kathryn A. Mandeville, Molly E. Clark (William), Emma S. Mandeville, Trey J. Witter and Ryan C. Witter. There will be calling hours held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018, at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home, 490 Voluntown Road, Jewett City. A graveside service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at the First Baptist Church Cemetery on Pendleton Hill Road in North Stonington.
