[23 January 1863], at the residence of her grand- mother, Mrs. Martha B. Rochelle, Jerusalem, Southampton county, of diphtheria, Mrs. LETITIA C. SHANDS, consort of Gen. William S. Shands, and granddaughter of the late Ex-Presi- dent Tyler, aged 18 years and 9 months. Endeared all the claims of lovely women to her devoted husband, she was indeed the idol around whom his affections and his joys were twined. When a union thus cemented by time and consecrated by mutual love and all the kindly and ennobling feeling of domestic concord—changing earth into an ember of Heaven—is dissolved, truly has it been said, 'tis the survivor dies. Lovely in life, she was no less so in death. Her placid and se- rene features but told, in silent and comforting eloquence, of the joys into which she had entered—a seeming gracious balm to the lacerated and bleeding hearts that surrounded her. A paragon of innocence and loveliness, she combined those graces and charms that ever cast a halo of joy and delight around the social circle. Charity, toleration and sympathy; a philan- thropy wide and diffusive as the bounds of earth; a benevolence enlarged by unceasing indulgence, and a cultivated desire to mit- igate suffering dispense blessing to every one, were trophies she gracefully won and eminently merited. But while earth is shorn of one of its brightest jewels, Heaven has added a saint to its congregation of angels. Too pure for the association of mortal imperfection, none other than a compan- ionship with the seraphs in glory was congenial with the virtues and the purity of her guiltless heart. "Flowers bloom to fade, but fade to bloom, While virtue will survive the tomb." 26 January 1863. ## Vital Statistics Summary | Field | Details | |---------|------------------------------------------------------| | Name | Letitia C.
