TOBEY, JAMES F. SR.  

James F. Tobey Sr., 67, formerly of Salem, passed away Thursday morning 23 January 1992 at Lewis Gale Hospital. Mr. Tobey was born in Norfolk, Va., graduated from Andrew Lewis High School, attended Wake Forest University, and was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as chief deputy clerk in the Roanoke County Circuit Court Clerk's Office and became Salem's first Circuit Court Clerk in 1968. He remained in that position until his retirement in December 1990. Mr. Tobey was a member of Salem Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon. Other local involvements included membership in the Salem Lions and Kiwanis Clubs.  

Survivors include Louise Moore Tobey, Salem, wife; Marion G. Tobey of Richmond, mother; two brothers and two sisters: Manley W. Tobey of Richmond and Thomas Tobey of Birmingham, Ala.; Margaret T. Williams of Suffolk and Virginia T. Smith of Richmond; and three sons: James F. Tobey Jr. and wife Rebecca Tobey of Roanoke, Gerald W. Tobey of Salem, and Christopher L. Tobey and wife Kim McMahan Tobey of Raleigh, N.C.; other survivors include five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.  

Services are to be held at Salem Baptist Church, Saturday, 25 January 1992, at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in favor of the Salem Rescue Squad.
