Frank Karn Thrift, Jr. Portsmouth, VA - Frank K. Thrift Jr., known to those who love him as "Daddy Bud", concluded his journey here on Earth and returned to the arms of The Lord on Thursday, August 27, 201 5. He was the beloved son of Frank and Esther Thrift. In the 94 years the world was blessed with this exceptional man, we gained a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, soldier and loyal friend. He was a graduate of Smithfield High School and a faithful member of Community United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, VA. Frank was a man of strength and integrity, He proudly served in the United States Army, 351 st Infantry Battalion, from 1943-1945. He bravely fought in World War II campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland. He later retired as a traffic controller for the VA Dept. of Transportation. Daddy Bud is survived by his 5 children: Linda Miller, Susan Porter, Frank Thrift III, Stephen Thrift and Martha Holland, 1 1 grandchildren: Jay, Brian, Blair, Mike, Chris, Shannon, Shawn, Lori, Tiffany, Dustin and Madison, and 12 great-grandchildren: Kami, Brielle, Nolan, Kelsey, Leland, Lexi, Tabitha, Coner, Miller, LeeAnne, Quinn and Lucie, by which he was most loved. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Nellie Moore Thrift; and a brother, C.W. Thrift. Frank was a blessed man who blessed many. A funeral service will be held at 3 PM Tuesday, September 1, 2015 in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by Rev. Kirk Culpepper. Entombment will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 to 7 PM. Following the entombment, there will be a reception at Community United Methodist Church, 37 Cherry Rd., Portsmouth, VA 23701.
