Tanner NEWPORT NEWS - Mark Ivey Tanner died peacefully at his home on 31 December 1997, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Tanner was born in Sandersville, Ga., on 30 October 1924. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he made his home in Miami, Fla., and later in Martinsville, Fla. In 1952, he came to Newport News and was employed by the Newport News Shipyard. At the time of his retirement in 1994, he was program manager of Welding Engineers. Mr. Tanner was an ordained deacon in Calvary Baptist Church since January 1955. He served his church faithfully for many years and was a member of the Baptist Brotherhood and Builders Sunday School Class. Over the years, he had served as superintendent of the Sunday school and director of Church Training. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Rathbone Tanner; three sons and their wives: Randy and Joy of Williamsburg, Ronny and Debbie of Sandston, and Rusty and Maria of Newport News; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three brothers: Jesse H. Tanner of Renton, Wash., James C. Tanner of Ellenwood, Ga., and Lennard Tanner of El Paso, Texas; three sisters: Evona Turner of Troutville, Margaret Holly of Stockbridge, Ga., and Mary Cooke of Sandersville, Ga. Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 4700 Huntington Ave., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, 3 January. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Stephen Crane, assisted by Mr. A.M. Andrews and Mr. Randy Tanner. Visitation will be at Peninsula Funeral Home on 2 January from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
