ROANOKE RAPIDS Chester Donald Simms Sr., 68, of 105 Northside Drive died Wednesday [9 Jan 1991] in Franklin Regional Medical Center [Louisburg, North Carolina] after a long illness. Simms was a World War I Army veteran. He was employed by J.P. Stevens for 42 years. Simms played softball with the Romacos and was inducted into the softball hall of fame in 1984. He was an all-state seven times. The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday [12 Jan 1991] in the Hockaday Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Robby Best. Burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. Simms is survived by his wife, Mrs. Josephine Westbrook Simms; two sons, Chester Donald Simms Jr. of Aulander and Mark Keith Simm of Martinsville, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Beverly Simms Lassiter of Roanoke Rapids; a sister, Mrs. Grace Simms Dickens of Norfolk, Va.; and three grandchildren.
