ROUNTREE Donald Edward "Sonny" Rountree Sr. of Handsom, Va., died July 26, 2000 at the East Pavilion. He was born April 29, 1918 in Newsoms, Va., a son of the late Daniel B. and Maude Cutchins Rountree. He was a retired State Registered Building Contractor and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, having served and around England and ending his naval career in Ocracoke, N.C. A graduate of Newsoms High School, he played baseball and basketball for several years and continued to play sports after high school for different communities. A member of Newsoms Hunt Club, Sonny loved fishing and hunting, especially with his brothers, and he was good at both. He was a member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret Johnson Rountree; a son, Donald E. Rountree Jr. and his wife, Jane of Henrico, N.C.; a daughter, Dianne Elizabeth Rountree of Franklin; one brother, Lemuel V. Rountree and his wife, Hilda of Newsoms; four grandchildren, Karen R. Kane and her husband, Patrick of Chester, Kevin Rountree and his wife, Susi of Atlanta, Ga., Cheryl Brandberg and her husband, John of Augusta, Ga., and Anna Lindahl of Orlando, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Kara and Keri Kane and Jake and Emma Brandberg; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepmother, Carrie Vincent Rountree; three brothers and a sister, Benjamin, Valon and Guy Rountree a and Ollie R. Blythe. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. James W. Browder II and the Rev. Charlene Beethoven officiating. Burial will in Southampton Memorial Park.
