Raiford, Oldest Special Railroad Agent In U S At Retirement, Dies At 79 BURDETTE — Lloyd Monroe Raiford, 79, known resident of the Burdette community, died at his home Wednesday 25 July 1962 afternoon after an illness of many months. Mr. Raiford was a retired special agent of the Virginian Railroad, and at the time of his retirement in 1959 was the oldest active special agent in the United States. He was a founder of the Tidewater Railroad Police Association and an active member of the American Railroad Protective section. He was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church and Pythian Charity Lodge Number 10 of Norfolk. He was the husband of Mrs. Mary Helen Joyner Raiford and a son of Merritte L. and Francis Darden Raiford of Southampton County. Besides his wife, he is survived by six daughters. Mrs. Francis Beaton and Mrs. Otis Drake of Norfolk, Mrs. Hazel Rhodes of Windsor, Mrs. Charles Shenberger of Richmond; Mrs Mason Buie of Greensboro, N. C., and Mrs. John F. Wellons of College Park, Md.; five sons. L. M. Raiford. Jr., Charles Raiford and Franklin Raiford. all of Franklin, Joseph Edmond Raiford of Norfolk and Merritte L. Raiford of Courtland; one brother. Harvey Raiford of Tampa. Fla.; two sisters. Mrs. C. N. Gibson of Norfolk and Miss Alma Raiford of Zuni; 22 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held from the Holland Funeral Chapel. Saturday 28 July 1962 at 2 p. m. by Rev. C. L. Gatling, pastor of Black Creek Baptist Church, and Rev. Edwin C. Thornton.
