Obituary of William James Porter 25 NOV 1863 - 14 NOV 1948 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Willie James Porter, 85, prominent Newsoms, Va., farmer and well known in Portsmouth, who died Sunday [14 Nov 1948], will be buried today [15 Nov 1948] in the Newsoms cemetery. Funeral services will be conducted at the grave at 3 o'clock by the Rev. R. E. Shapland, pastor of the Newsoms Methodist church. He was the son of the late Henry T. and Mrs. Ann S. Porter, of Southampton county, and the husband of the late Mrs. Mattie Simmons Porter. Surviving are six sons; G. W. Porter, L. L. Porter, Amos Porter, B. F, Porter and Harvey Porter, all of Newsoms, and W. J. Porter, of Roanoke Rapids N. C.: one daughter, Mrs. Earnest Pettiway, of Emporia; twenty-one grandchildren; six great-grandchildren: one sister, Mrs. A. W Tucker, of Newsoms: and one brother, T. H. Porter, of Boykins. The body was removed to the W. J. M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home, Franklin.
