Linwood (Cat) Lee Pope NEWSOMS - Linwood "Cat" Pope, 83, "The Peanut Man," died 9 March 2006, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. A native of Southampton County, he was the son of the late Willie G. and Patti Sue Edwards Pope. He was retired from Hancock Peanut Company and had also worked with Planter's Peanut Company for 10 years and PGCMA for eight years. He was a past councilman of the Newsoms Town Council and was the first president of the Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department. "Cat" was a faithful member of Newsoms Baptist Church and served as deacon, president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer of the Men's Bible Class, church treasurer for 14 years and church recorder for many years. Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Burgess of Courtland and Gwen Overby of Branchville; and two brothers, James Pope of Courtland and William Pope of Newport News. Mr. Pope was preceded in death by four sisters, Gertrude Harrell, Marie Blunt, Virginia King and Elizabeth Fowler; two brothers, Elvin Carroll Pope and Harvey Pope; and his stepmother, Jessie C. Pope. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Newsoms Baptist Church with the Rev. Renee Edwards and the Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. A special invitation is given to "Cat's little friends." He dearly loved little children.
