Piland Sr. SOUTH NORFOLK--Robert Newton Piland Sr., 72, of 1003 Bethel Road died Monday [8 October 1962] at 9:15 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital after illness of four months. A native of Buchanan, he was a son of Robert Starkey and Mrs. Mary Frances Piland and husband of Mrs. Martha Wyatt Piland. He lived here 32 years and was a retired machinist of Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Campostella Methodist Church and Army veteran of World War I. Besides his widow, surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred L. Spruill of South Norfolk and Mrs. Daisy E. Vann of Norfolk; three sons, Robert N. Piland Jr. of Williamsburg, Lindsey O. Piland of Norfolk and Wallace E. Piland of South Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. Doris McCallum and Mrs. Mary Austin of Georgia; two brothers, O. G. Piland, R. T. Piland and P. O. Piland of Suffolk; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted in Graham Funeral Home Wednesday [10 October 1962] at 3 p.m. by the Rev. H. R.
