On Saturday, March 8th [1917], at her home in Woodland, Mrs. Martha Brittle died after five weeks suffering, brought on by a stroke of paralysis. The funeral was conducted at Woodland Baptist church and burial took place at her old home in Hertford County. Mrs. Brittle was twice married, the first time to Mr. Roswell C Parker, to whom were born two children, Sarah B Parker, and a son dying in infancy. The second time to Mr. Jesse T. Brittle, to whom were born a son, Dr. Paul C. Brittle, of Conway, N C, who has truly been a blessing to these two aged people. Mrs. Brittle was a plain, good Christian woman, and nothing more clearly describes her life than a passage of Scripture found written out in her Bible as follows: "Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in Heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few." Surviving her are her husband, son, and four devoted grandchildren. The deceased is the last of a family of several brothers and two sisters—one of the best families of Virginia. She came to North Carolina when a young lady. We do and shall miss her so much, yet we feel that she was resigned to the Lord's will, and we therefore give her back to God, knowing that her sweet and gentle life has been a blessing to those who knew her best.
