He served in Germany where he fought for his country in the bars of Germany against Polish soldiers over many a fraulein. He completed his enlistment and returned to Portsmouth. He played with the likes of Johnny "Moon" Hudgins, John "Del" Delinski, Tommy "Killer" Kilpatrick, Johnny "Buck" Buckley, Eddie "Mac" McSweeney, Rock and Dewey Fussell to name a few. They were a formidable and comedic force both on the field and at the bar after the games!During those years he found time to finish his education at Old Dominion University. He married Charlene Henn, with whom he has been for 51 years. He was the father of four children: Doug Hogmire (Missy), Christopher Nagle, Byron Nagle (Angela) and Jennifer Lutz (Matt).
