He was a native and lifelong resident of Perquimans County; son of Billy and Sarah Collins Mathews; husband of Mrs. Massie. Ward Mathews; and a member of the Woodland Methodist Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Nathan Mathews of Winfall, Mathew (Pete) Mathews Miami, Fla., and Charles and Floyd Mathews of Hertford; three stepsons, Walter Williams of Elizabeth City and Alphonsa and Claude Williams of Hertford; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond Stanton, Winfall, and Mrs. Ray White of Hertford; one step daughter, Mrs. W. H. Mathews, Elizabeth City; and one sister, Mrs. George Benton of Hertford, and 25 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Woodland Methodist Church by the Rev. R. Meekins, pastor. Burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery.
