Jack Martin Obituary Jack C. Martin July 21, 1932 - January 31, 2015 Courtland, VA.-Jack C. Martin, 82, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2015 at Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond, VA. He was born in Mississippi, the son of Harper and Roxie Shettles Martin. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Tennessee University. Jack held teaching positions at Milligan College, West Virginia University, Appalachian State University and Paul D. Camp Community College, retiring in 1994. While at PDCCC, he directed the Summer Institute for Teachers sponsored by the Union Camp Corporation. He particularly enjoyed teaching nursing students from the Obici Program. He was an army veteran, member of the YMCA and Courtland Baptist Church. Jack enjoyed music and played with several area bands including the Southampton Ramblers, The Over-the-hill Fun Bunch, Lakeside Junction, Virginia Sawgrass and Reams Station Bluegrass Band. Their venues were churches, nursing homes and restaurants. His love of teaching extended to his playing as he delighted in instructing children who showed an interest is his upright bass. He loved reading, fishing, crossword puzzles, traveling and watching Duke basketball and the Washington Redskins. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean Gregory Martin,; daughters Tracy M Morrison (Robert) of Richmond, VA, Celia Martin and Cindy Martin of Jonesborough, TN; a sister, Sarah M. Briney of Suwanee, Georgia; grandsons, Jeremy Gentry and Michael Martin, of Jonesborough, TN, and Ryan Archer of Chattanooga, TN. Jack had many special nieces and nephews and a host of friends and bluegrass buddies. He was predeceased by a son, Jay Martin. Family visitation will be held from 6pm- 8pm on Friday, February 6, 2015 at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin. A celebration of life service will be conducted at the Courtland Baptist Church on Saturday, February 7 at 11 am. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Courtland Baptist Church.
