YORKTOWN - Clifton Wells Loveland Jr., age 78, died suddenly on 14 December 2002, at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Clifton retired in 1986 from Newport News Shipbuilding following 44 years of commitment. He attended the Apprentice Program and, before finishing, was drafted into the United States Army. Following the war, Mr. Loveland returned to the Shipyard, Boiler Design Department, and designed boilers for ESSO Tankers, the JFK, as well as the Enterprise. He was one of the founders of the Integrated Logistics Support Management Department from which he retired. Clifton was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Yorktown. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Elizabeth Loveland; two sons, Gary E. Loveland and wife Nancy, and W. Jeff Loveland and wife Joy; four stepchildren, Jo Anne McGuire, Kay Woodlief, Gwen Kemp, and Terry Ackiss; 19 grandchildren, Tyler, Liz, Chris, Desirie, Michael, Benji, David, Raymond, Denise, Chris, Christian, Nick, Kim, Joey, Anthony, Katie, Amber, Douglas, and Beth; two great-grandchildren Aaliyah and J.R.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Carlton Bakkum will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church, Yorktown. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
