Obituary of Shirley Joyner 25 MAR 1920 - 12 FEB 2002 SMITHFIELD – Shirley Joyner, age 81, husband of Rachel Joyner, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at his home. He was the son of Charlotte and Joseph Rogers Joyner. Survivors include six children and in-laws: Shelia Joyner, Shirley and Billy Simpkins, Angie Taylor, Joe and Teresa Joyner, Pam and John Woodin and Janet and Jesse Appel. His nine grandchildren include: Ann, Whill, Katie, Rebecca, Josh, Bud, Edward, Candy and Racheal. He is also survived by his sisters, Elma Seward and Pauline Miller. Mr. Joyner was preceded in death by a sister, Estelle J. Harris, and a brother, Joseph Joyner. Mr. Joyner was a World War II veteran in the 5th U.S. Army Division. He served as an honor guard at the Pott’s Dam Treaty. He was a member of Bacon’s Castle Baptist Church. His sense of humor and love of storytelling will be missed. The family will receive friends at the home. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. John Roberts and the Rev. Jimmy Acree officiating.
