JOHNSON, CHARLES EDWARD, 85, of Pinehurst, N.C., formerly of Clearwater, Fla., died on Wednesday, 26 June 1996, in Pinehurst. He came to Clearwater in 1969 from Indiana and moved in 1980 from Clearwater to Pinehurst. He was the former owner and president of National Liquor Corp. in Indianapolis. He was an acclaimed golfer in both Florida and Indiana. Among his golfing distinctions, he was a state senior champion in Indiana, a Midwestern Senior Champion, recipient of the Clifford Wagner Award in Indiana, and a member of three U.S. Senior Golf Association international teams. He was president of Highland Golf & Country Club in Indianapolis and chairman of the U.S. Steel American Cancer Tournament in Clearwater. He was a Mason and a Shriner. Survivors include three sons: Charles E., Pinehurst; William Johnson; and Robert Johnson, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Barbara J. Draper, Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Powell Funeral Home, Southern Pines, N.C.

He died on 26 June 1996. Mr. Johnson was the former owner and president of National Liquor Corp. A former Indiana state senior golf champion, he was past president of Highland Golf & Country Club, a former Midwestern Senior Champion and the recipient of a Clifford Wagner Award in Indiana golf. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clifford Wagner Memorial Fund. He was the widower of Mary Jo Wiler Johnson. Survivors: children Charles E., William Johnson, Robert Johnson, Barbara J. Draper; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Powell Funeral Home, Southern Pines, N.C., is handling arrangements.
