He was born in Nansemond County, VA the son of the late William Herbert Jernigan and Olif Harrell Gay. He was predeceased by his sister, Mamie Arrowood and brother, Roy Jernigan. Monk was a United States Army veteran. He later went on to own and operate Monk s Auto Parts. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Magnolia Ruritan Club. Monk is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn R. Jernigan; daughter, Cynthia A. Brinkley (John); sons, Tony Bradley (Lisa), and Michael E. Bradley (Cindy); 4 grandchildren, John Brinkley (Tracy), Stacie Ellis (Justin), Lauren Bauer (Robert), and Reba Bradley; 6 great grandchildren, Peyton, Cheyenne, Carson, Ava, Carter, and Harper Lee; brother, Gerald Jernigan (Ann); and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Friday, May 5, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Howard Small officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery.
