Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Russel Arnold Hughes and Mary Louise Hannaman Hughes. He was also predeceased by a sister, Carol Cowart; a son, Zeke Cohn; and a grandson, David Lee Wilson, III. Larry was a US Army veteran and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Old Dominion University. He retired from the Electronics and Supply Dept. at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Larry was a member of South Quay Baptist Church. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sharyn Cates Hughes; three daughters, Lisa Cook (Mike), Lori Simpson (Mike), and Jennifer Tate; two sisters, Barbara Shanks and Donna Schoenberger; six grandchildren, Ashley Shea (Andrew), Matthew Cook (Sarah), Jacob Simpson (Alexis), Megan Simpson, Austin Tate, and Avery Tate; and two great grandchildren, Carter Shea and Kayden Simpson. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2PM Wednesday, May 8, 2024 in DC Church, West Portsmouth Campus, 4710 High Street West, Portsmouth, VA 23703 with Pastor Caleb Myers officiating. Burial will be held at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
