Melvina Higgins was born in Letcher county, Ky., January 13, 1826, and died in Holton, Kansas, January 23, 1898, aged 72 years and ten days. She was married to Benjamin Martin January 18, 1844, and resided in Kentucky till 1887, when they removed to Holton, where their declining days have been calm and peaceful. She became a member of the Christian church at an early age, and had lived a consistent Christian life.

She had a quiet disposition, was a good neighbor, a kind friend and loving mother. Her health had been poor for several years, and for the past four weeks had been suffering with lagrippe, and was apparently getting better when she was seized with hemorage of the lungs and lived but a few minutes. She leaves an aged husband and nine children, three in Kentucky and six in Kansas, to mourn her loss. 

The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Cook of the Christian church and Rev. Allison of the Presbyterian church, The remains were laid to rest in the Holton cemetery.
