Obituary of William Riddick (Capt) Hayes 3 OCT 1866 - 17 DEC 1949 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- William R Hayes Dies at Age of 83 Franklin Dec 18 — William R Hayes, 83, former resident of Franklin died at a Portsmouth hospital Saturday [17 December 1949] night after an illness of a few years. Captain Hayes, as he was known to many citizens of Franklin, was formerly connected with the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company, an organization well known among the older people here with boats plying between Franklin and Elizabeth City and Edenton N. C. He was the son of the late Timothy and Lavinia Darden Hayes of Isle of Wight County and the husband of the late Elizabeth Withy Hayes of Franklin. He was a member of the Franklin BaptistChurch for many years. Surviving him is a son, Dr. George R Hayes of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Mrs Odelon P Delcambre, of Portsmouth; and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the funeral home of W. J. M.
