Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie Amanda Vaughan Hawkins, 82, widow of Thomas William Hawkins, a former mayor of Charlotte, who died yesterday morning (22 June 1943) after a long illness, will be conducted tomorrow morning (24 June 1943) at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the pastor, the Rev. William A. Alexander, officiating. Mrs. Hawkins was born in Murfreesboro, 10 January 1861, the daughter of Uriah and Sarah Amanda Vaughan; she was married on 13 June 1893 to T.W. Hawkins of Littleton. Since 1897, she has been a resident of Charlotte, residing at 736 North College Street. Mr. Hawkins died in 1923. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of the Electric Book Club and was active in the Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors are two sons, U. Vaughan Hawkins of Charlotte and T.W. Hawkins of Shelby; two daughters, Sara Hawkins and Rose E. Hawkins, both of Charlotte; one grandson, U. Vaughan Hawkins Jr., of Charlotte; four nieces, Miss Sara Barnes, Miss Annie Barnes, Mrs. Mary Harrell, and Miss Sara Vaughan, all of Murfreesboro; four nephews, B.B. Winborne and Collin Barnes of Murfreesboro; Stanley Winborne of Raleigh; and Fred Arps of Gainesville, Florida; one sister-in-law, Miss Lucy D. Hawkins of Charlotte. Active pallbearers will include E.P. Nisbet, Dr. Wallace Gibbs, Dr. C.C. Keiger, Thomas Haughton, W.W. Hagood, C.A. Meisenheimer, Horace Nims of Mount Holly, and J.P. Hackney Jr. of Charlotte.
