Born and raised in Southampton County, she was a daughter of the late Pearly Edgar Modlin and Minnie Sue Taylor Modlin. She is predeceased by her six sisters, Elizabeth Rich, Grace Keech, Pearl Juel, Hope Dodson, Evelyn Modlin, and Minnie Boone, and her two brothers, Clayton and Roland Modlin. Bernice was a retired Cafeteria Manager for Franklin City Public Schools and a member of Franklin Baptist Church. After retiring she spent countless hours taking care of her husband, Smokey, and her sisters that passed away before her.
