Obituary of Granville Pearl (Rock) Harrison 1 Jul 1917 - 13 Dec 1997 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FRANKLIN, Va. - Granville Pearl "Rock" Harrison, 80, a retired teacher and coach, died Saturday of cancer at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home. Mr. Harrison was an Ashland, Miss., native. He was a World War I| Army veteran who received a Purple Heart with two bronze clusters during service in the European theater. He was a lifelong Baptist. He was a member of the American Legion and Kappa Sigma fraternity. He played college football and basketball for Mississippi State University from 1937- 40 and played professional football for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Eagles (1941), the Detroit Lions (1942) and the Green Bay Packers (1946) in the National Football League. During his military service, he played and coached for the service team inEurope, winning the 1945 European championship. He was a member of the coaching staff of Texas Western College, Garfield High School in Woodbridge, Va., and Stafford High School in Falmouth, Va. In 1970, he moved to Florida, where he was head football coach at John Carroll School from 1970- 73, St. Edward's Prep School of Vero Beach from 1974-77, and Fort Pierce Central and Fort Pierce Westwood high schools. He was inducted into the Mississippi Copiah-Lincoln Community College Hall of Fame in 1990. Survivors include: wife, Dorothea; daughter, Sandy H. Deale of Franklin, Va.; and two grandchildren.
