Obituary of John Lewis Harrington Sr 1856 - 24 AUG 1927 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAYOR OF LEWISTON DIES AT HIS HOME Aulander, Aug. 26.-John Lewis Harrington, aged 71, mayor and magistrate of Lewiston, prominent and highly respected citizen, known as Judge Harrington, died yesterday morning at about eleven o'clock after a ten day illness with kidney trouble and high blood pressure. He was born in Beaufort county in 1856 and his parents moved to this community when he was an infant. In 2885 he went in the grocery business in Aulander with his brother, J. Lawrence Harrington, in which business he stayed for twelve years. In 1897 he moved to Lewiston and went into the mechanical work there. He spent practically all the rest of his life there except a few years which he spent in Winston-Salem and Macon, Ga. He was the originator of the Harrington peanut picker which is now known as the Roanoke peanut pickwhich is manufactured at Lewsiton and with which company he was connected at the time of his death. Judge Harrington was formerly a member of the County Board of Education and was also a former member of the Board of County Commissioners. He was married to Miss Martha Ellen Vick, of Woodland in 1886, who died seven years ago. Funeral services were conducted at Lewiston by Rev. Mr. Kendricks, pastor of the Lewiston Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. W. L.
