Harrell Killed When Cars Collide Suffolk Resident Is Thrown Under Wheels of Auto SUFFOLK, Sept. 23[1957]-A 63 year old Suffolk man was killed instantly today when his automobile ran off onto a road shoulder, spun around across the highway and smashed into the front of an oncoming car. The victim, Jesse Edward Harrell, 513 S. Main St., was headed north about 4:15 p.m. on Rt. 32 a tenth of a mile south of Suffolk when the accident occurred, according to State Trooper C. F. Wheeler. Driving alone, Harrell went off the road onto a shoulder and around to the right of a truck in front of him. Apparently he lost control of the car at this point, said Wheeler, passing the truck on the right and crossing in front of it across the highway. Harrell's car then struck the front of a southbound automobile operated by Vernon Edward Babb, 41, Rt. 1, Box 66, Suffolk. Babb was shaken up and bruised and his wife, Margaret, 40, suffered lacerations of the chin, left arm and the right leg. A son, Kenneth, 10, had a cut above the left eye and his infant brother, whom he was holding in the back seat, was unhurt. Wheeler said Harrell, a highway department employee, apparently was thrown across the seat out of the right front door of his car under the wheels of the Babb vehicle. Harrell, dead when the trooper arrived, suffered a fractured skull and neck. Both cars were heavily damaged. He was the son of the late Jesse A. and Mrs. Maggie Whitfield Harrell of Nansemond County. He was a World War I veteran and a member of the Holland Christian Church. Mr. Harrell is survived by three sisters, Mrs. R. K. Saunders of Windsor, Mrs. Mattie Harrison of Denbigh and Mrs. Annie Williams of Nansemond County, and two brothers, Marrion S. Harrell and Lonnie W. Harrell of Nansemond County. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday [25 Sep 1957] at 4 p.m. at the I. O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. R. E. Brittle, assisted by the Rev. John C. Mitchell.
