A native of Chuckatuck, he had been a resident of Smithfield for the past 15 years. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church and of the Men's Bible Class of the church. He had been employed in the welding department of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co for 25 years and before that served as a member of the Suffolk Police Department for 15 years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs Grace Carter Gwaltney; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Fletcher of Newport News; a son, Michael Jonathon Gwaltney with the Green Berets in Massachusetts; a sister, Mrs Eloise Gwaltney Bailey of Maitland Fla.; a brother, George Lafeyette Gwaltney of Chuckatuck, and one grandson. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday 23 July 1970 in Oakland Christian Church in Chuckatuck by the Rev. Millard Stevens, assisted by the Rev. R E. Brittle of Hunterdale Christian Church in Franklin.
