SMITHFIELD - Mrs. Effie Scott Gwaltney, 80, widow of James Lee Gwaltney, died Saturday, Suffolk night in the Obici Hospital after the a long illness. 

Mrs. Gwaltney was a long-time resident of the Isle of Wight County and was a member of the Bethany Methodist Church. 

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lawrence C. Thacker, Mrs. P. Smith Turner, Mrs. Carson A. Delk and Mrs. Marvin R. Thomas, all of Smithfield: one son, Horace D. Gwaltney of Smithfield; a sister, Mrs. Ivan H. Gwaltney of Smithfield; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Bethany Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken from the Bullock Funeral Home in Smithfield to the church one hour before services.
