A native of Harrells, NC, he was a son of the late David John and Clell Carr Gavin and was a U.S. Army veteran. Foots retired after forty four years of service from Union Camp Corporation and was an avid outdoorsman, a member of the Bronco Rod and Gun Club and a former Boy Scout Leader for Troop 125. He was a member of Hunterdale Christian Church and was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Arthur Gavin, two brothers, Jimmie and Bobby Gavin, and his baby sister, Christine Gavin. Survivors include his wife, Linda Gunn Gavin; three sons, E. Craig Gavin of Richmond, Cabot Lee Gavin and Melody Price of Chesapeake and Charles A. Gavin and wife, Heather, of Richmond; a sister, Ruth Ezzelle of Harrells, NC; eight grandchildren, Caitlin G. Argalas, Hudson Lee, Mari Kathryn, Barbara, Sam, Nicholas, Matthew and Sophia Gavin.
