Glenn Frye Obituary Glenn Edward Frye, Sr. Portsmouth - Glenn Edward Frye, Sr., 89, died January 26, 2016. Eddie was born in Pinehurst, NC, to the late William Glenn Frye and Mary Ann Maness. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church. He attended school in Carthage, NC, and at Taccoa Falls College, Taccoa Falls, GA. He came to Portsmouth in 1942 to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. In 1944, he enlisted with the Army of the United States and served in the 2114th Service Unit and the 519th Air Service Group. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended the Taccoa Falls Institute. He later returned to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he remained until his retirement in 1981. Following his retirement, he spent many years working at Foster Funeral Home where his friendly nature was put to good use. In addition to being an avid player of the daily "Jumble" puzzle, he enjoyed gardening, long walks and stumbling upon the occasional lost coin, a hobby that entertained the family. Eddie was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruthe Hammar Frye (m. June 12, 1953); siblings Cora Jane, William Wade, David, Leland Francis, Eleanor Ann, Delaney Reed, and Gayle Lynn. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday at Highland Baptist Church, 3710 Deep Creek Blvd., Portsmouth. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Portsmouth.
