Obituary of Horace Buchanan (Buck) Free Sr 6 Mar 1924 - 9 Sep 2017 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GREENWOOD - Horace Buchanan "Buck" Free, 93, of 1110 Marshall Road, Greenwood, died on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Wesley Commons Rehabilitative Center. Born in Greenwood on March 6, 1924, he was the son of Horace G. and Beatrice Buchanan Free. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Furman University, attended the Graduate School of Social Work at Tulane University and received his Master's Degree in Social Work from the Richmond School of Social Work, now a part of Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Free retired after twenty-five years as Executive Director of Family Service of Charleston. Prior to that, he spent eight years as a Psychiatric Social Worker at Greenville (SC) Mental Health Center. He was an active member of several professional associations including the National Association of Social Workers and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). He was a charter member of the South Carolina Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SCAMFT). Mr. Free grew up in Greenwood, left as a young man but, after forty odd years, returned in 2000. He enjoyed golf, all athletic events at his beloved Furman, genealogical research and travel. He was a communicant at The Church of the Resurrection, Episcopal. He is survived by wife of forty years, Jeanne M. Selander; daughters, Sharon Waites (Weldon) of Columbia and Jenny Scott (Danny) of West Columbia; son, Mark D. Free (Beth) of Goose Creek; stepson, John Sippell (Dr. Mary) of Portsmouth, RI; stepdaughter, Sally Carrier (Chris) of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren, Jessica Daly (Chris), Ross Shelnutt (Lindsey), Mathew Shelnutt (Risa), Josh Free and Andrew Free; a step granddaughter, Margaux Sippell; and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday [12 Sep 2017] at The Church of the Resurrection, 700 South Main Street, Greenwood, with the Reverend Nicholas Beasley officiating. The family will receive friends in Bishop's Hall at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, following the service. Inurnment will be in the Columbarium on the church grounds.
