Miss Elsie Whitley, accompanied by Mrs. Julian Goodwin, sang "Good Night, Good Morning”. The casket was covered with an American flag. A firing squad from Fort Eustis gave the salute and Bugler Pvt. Besides his parents, Duke is survived by two sisters. Miss Elizabeth Duke and Mrs. Francis Stratton; one brother, Joseph H Duke, all of Suffolk. Pfc Duke entered the Army in October 1942, and took his basic training at Camp Campbell, Kentucky and Camp Barkley, Texas. He was sent to England in January 1943, and to France in June 1943, where he was later killed. While in the service, Pfc. Duke was awarded the Purple Heart and received a citation from the President of the United States for his bravery. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors.
