Born in Annapolis, he was a graduate of Annapolis High School, where he received the Jim Rhodes Trophy for excellence in football. He also played football for Anne Arundel Community College. During the Vietnam War, he served in the Army and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Sergeants Association and the Emerald Society. He played golf, crabbed and fished.
