She was born Nov. 23, 1888 in Nansemond County, a daughter of John S. and Virtley (Stephenson) Copeland. She also lived in Norfolk for 24 years prior to living in Verona since 1968. She was a member of Oakland Christian Church. She married William A. Gray Sr. on Oct. 18, 1908. He preceded her in death July 21, 1963. Survivors include two sons, William A. Jr. of Suffolk and John S. Gray of Verona; one sister, Mrs. C. P. Darden Sr. of Portsmouth; three brothers, John S. of Norfolk, Elmer E. of Hampton and Thomas J. Copeland of Portsmouth; and nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday [Dec. 20, 1990] at Oakland Christian Church in Suffolk by the Rev. David L. Wilson. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home.
