CHUCKATUCK - Samuel Gibson Chatman, 68, died Thursday night at his home.

A native of Nansemond County, Chatman was a member of Whitehead's Grove Baptist Church and the men's Bible class. He was a retail merchant in Nansemond County for 50 years.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Evelyn Gale Chatman, one daughter, Mrs. Ellen Hassler of Kailua, Hawaii, two sons, S. Gibson Chatman Jr. of Hobson and J. Wayne Chatman of Chuckatuck, one sister, Mrs. Lelia Griffin of Elberon, three brothers, George Webb Chatman of Norfolk, Leon F. Chatman and William Octavis Chatman of Smithfield and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Colonial Funeral Home in Smithfield by the Rev. James Griffin. Interment will be in Whitehead's Grove Church cemetery.
